Liverpool To Mark John Lennon's 70th Birthday With Two Month Festival

March 24, 2010
Liverpool To Mark John Lennon's 70th Birthday With Two Month FestivalJohn Lennon's home city of Liverpool will host a two month festival to celebrate what would have been his 70th birthday.

Music, film, art and poetry events are being organised in honour of The Beatle who was murdered by Mark Chapman in New York on December 8th 1980.

The festival will run from John Lennon's birthday on October 9th right through to December 9th – 30 years and a day after his death.

Liverpool's Lord Mayor, councillor Mike Storey, told the BBC: “John Lennon is one of the most iconic figures of the 20th Century and a Liverpool lad who became known in every corner of the globe.

"His enduring message of peace is as important now as ever and continues to be an inspiration to many. The John Lennon Tribute Season will allow us to remember him as a man, celebrate his music, and his overall contribution to our city."

It's hoped that tens of thousands of tourists will descent upon Liverpool for the cultural programme.

2010 also marks two more important landmarks - 50 years since The Beatles formed and 40 years since their split.
