Metallica are considering whether to follow in the footsteps of Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails by self releasing material once their record contract expires. The rock titans’ drummer Lars Ulrich told Rolling Stone that he would hate to go the way of Madonna and U2 by signing lucrative contracts with Live Nation. Instead, he said the band would like to keep things in their own hands. 
Patti Smith is to release her spoken-word performances of ‘The Coral Sea’, which feature My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields, on July 11th. Smith’s performances, a tribute to her close friend, the late photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, were recorded in London on June 22nd 2005 and September 12th 2006. 
Chris Martin is rumoured to working on new material outside of Coldplay with cheesy dance trio Cascada. The news was revealed by Jo Whiley on Radio 1 this morning (April 25) but has caused confusion with fans after she first said that Martin had left the band. 
Producer and musical extraordinaire Steve Albini is set to work on the new Scott Weiland album, it has emerged. The former Velvet Revolver man told infamous radio DJ, Howard Stern, that he has drafted in the producing legend as well as No Doubt’s drummer Adrian Young for the long-player. 
Phil Collins, known best for his role as the lead singer and drummer in Genesis, appears to have dramatically announced his retirement from the music industry. In an interview with The Times newspaper, Collins said he had no plans to tour again and that any future writing was unlikely to become an album. 
Longtime rivals G-Unit and The Game have retreated from a possible album showdown by changing the release dates of their new records. G-Unit’s ‘T.O.S. (Terminate On Sight)’ and The Game’s ‘L.A.X’ had both been due for release on June 24th in America. 
Amy Winehouse has made her debut in the Sunday Times Rich List with an estimated £10million fortune. The pop star, whose recent antics have sparked fresh fears about her safety, ranks 10th in the top 100 richest people in music in Britain under the age of 30.
