. . .

And he'll tell her - He's working late again
But she knows to well there's something goin' on.
She's been neglected - and she needs a friend
So her trembling fingers dial the telephone.

And Lord, it hurts her - doin' this again
He's the best friend that her husband ever knew.
When she's lonely - he's more than just a friend
He's the one she loans her body to.

Daytime friends and nighttime lovers -
Hoping no one else discovers
Where they go - What they do -
In their secret hideaway

Daytime friends and nighttime lovers -
They don't want to hurt the others
So they love - In the nighttime -
And shake hands in the light of day.

And when it's over - there's no peace of mind
Just a longin' for the way things should have been.
And she wonders - Why some men never find
That a woman needs a lover and a friend.

Goodbye Marie

I woke up this mornin'
All cotton- mouthed from drinkin'
Wonderin' how I'd make it through the day
Wild eyed and crazy
All burned out from thinkin'
Wonderin' how the hell I's gonna say.

Goodbye Marie, oh goodbye Marie
Out the window there's a lonesome highway callin' me
It was fun Marie, but I got to run Marie
If I can not keep your love
At least I'll have your memory
Goodbye Marie.

Wakin' up beside you
On a Tijuana mornin'
With that ocean breeze to keep us cool
Three weeks of lovin'
Twenty-one nights of heaven
I stayed just long enough to be your fool.

Oh goodbye Marie, …
Por favor, pour me
One more tequila
I need all the courage I can find
This time tomorrow
I'll be back in Houston
Thinkin' about the girl I left behind.

So goodbye Marie, ….

In Cumberland Kentucky
On a cool hot evening
Billy lay in love with Marrianne
She was a rich judge's daughter
He was a son of a miner
But that night their love was more than they could stand
The judge said to his daughter
That son of that coal miner
Is someone you'll go hell to leave alone
She knew his dad so well
She knew she couldn't tell
But the truth was bound in show before too long

Their love had started growing on its own
You can't out run the long arm of the law
No, you can't out run the long arm of the law
Billy placed his hand on Mary
And he felt the baby's moving
Kissed her and said I'll see you when I can
The judge had made a promise
When he caught up with Billy
He'd sent him far away from Marianne
The whole town knew he'd do it
Too many times he'd proved it
To at least a hundred men behind the wall

He'd smiled behind that frown
And when he brought that gavel down
He called himself the long arm of the law
And he'd set his mind on seeing Billy fall
In a hot humid mine shack
A mid-white pulled the sheet back
And placed cool damp towel on Marianne
Billy's eyes were wide with wonder
From the spell he was under
When she placed the new born baby in his hands
He didn't hear the siren
Just a baby's crying
That miracle of love was all he saw

When the door came crashing down
And Billy turned around
He felt the heart and soul inside him fall
He stood face to face
With the long arm of the law
You can't out run the long arm of the law
No, you can't out run the long arm of the law
You can hide out for a while
He says with a smile
But you can't out run the long arm of the law

Seemed like everybody down in Cumberland Kentucky
Came out that day to see poor Billy's trial
The court was called to order
There sat the judge's daughter
She looked so proud
Holding Billy's child
When they brought Billy to him
The judge just look right thru him
As he held that Holy Bible in his hand
And he smiled at his grandson
Then his eyes cut back to Billy
And said I think this time
The law will understand
Son, I sentence you to live with Marianne

You can't out run the long arm of the law
No, you can't out run the long arm of the law
He said to Billy with a smile
I know you hide out for a while
Ah but you can't out run the long arm of the law

Now if the aim in your life is to settle me down I couldn't change my point of
view
I got a lady in red at the back of my head but the woman in white is you
Do you wanna be the only one, fade away in the mornin' sun
I could love you all of my life, you are my wife, haven't I let you know-ow

We don't need no buried treasure, no buried treasure, we don't need it
We don't stand on ceremony but life is phony in spite of it
You can never be all you wanna be when you're searchin' for gold
We don't need no buried treasure, I've still got you (still got you, still got
you)
I've still got you in my sou-ou-oul

Well it's a long way down and you gotta get up, you gotta figure on a master
plan
You couldn't do it, if you don't get ready, you'll be beaten by the other man
Do you wanna be the last one in, play the game that you just don't win
I can see me makin' you cry, sayin' goodbye, but I could never let you go-o

We don't need no buried treasure, no buried treasure, we don't need it
We don't stand on ceremony but life is phony in spite of it
You can never be all you wanna be when you're searchin' for gold
We don't need no buried treasure, I've still got you (still got you, still got
you)
I've still got you in my sou-ou-oul

Well you're takin' my life in the palm of your hand, make you mine for another
day
Ain't nobody doesn't need anybody when the good times turn away
I don't wanna be the lonely one, fade away in the evenin' sun
I could love you all of my life, you are my wife, haven't I told you so-o

We don't need no buried treasure, no buried treasure, we don't need it
(Baby we don't need i-i-it)
We don't stand on ceremony but life is phony in spite of it
(In spite of i-i-it)
You can never be all you wanna be when you're searchin' for gold
We don't need no buried treasure, I've still got you (still got you, still got
you)
I've still got you in my sou-ou-oul
We don't need it, we don't need it

(We don't need no buried treasure) we don't need no buried treasure, we don't
need it
(Baby we don't need it)
We don't stand on ceremony but life is phony in spite of it
(We don't stand on ceremony in spite of it)
You can never be all you wanna be when you're searchin' for gold
(We don't need no buried treasure) We don't need no buried treasure
I've still got you (still got you) I've still got you in my sou-ou-oul
We don't need it, we don't need it
(We don't need no buried treasure) we don't need no buried treasure, we don't
need it
(Baby we don't need it)

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses
You've been out ridin fences for so long now
Oh and you're a hard one, but I know that you've got your reasons
The things that are pleasin' you, can hurt you somehow.

Don't you draw the queen of diamonds boy, she'll beat you if she's able
You know the queen of hearts is always your best bet
Now it seems to me some fine things have been laid upon your table
But you only want the ones you can't get.

Desperado, you ain't gettin' no younger
Your pain and your hunger, they're drivin' you home
And freedom, oh freedom, well that's just some people talkin'
Your prison is walking through this world all alone.

Don't your feet get cold in the wintertime
The sky won't snow and the sun won't shine
It's hard to tell the nighttime from the day
And you're losin' all your highs and lows
Ain't it funny how the feelin' goes away?

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses
Come down from your fences- open the gates
It may be rainin, but there's a rainbow above you
You'd better let somebody love you, let somebody love you.

You'd better let somebody love you
Before it's too late...

The old hometown looks the same
as I step down from the train
And there to meet me is my mama and papa
And down the road I look and there runs Mary
her golden lips like cherries
It's good to touch the green green grass of home.

Yes they've all come to meet me
arms reaching smiling sweetly
It's so good to touch the green green grass of home.

The old house is still standing
though the paint is cracked and dry
And there's that old oak tree that I used to play on
down the lane I'd walk with my sweet Mary
her golden lips like cherries
It's good to touch the green green grass of home.

Yes they've all come ...

Then I awake and look around me
at the gray walls that surround me
And I realized that I was only dreaming
For there's a guard and there's a sad old padre
arm in arm we'll walk at daybreak again
I'll touch the green green grass of home.

Yes they'll all come to see me i
n the shade of that old oak tree
As they lay me neath the green green grass of home.

His daddy was an honest man, red dirt Georgia farmer
His mamma lived her short life having kids and baling hay
He had fifteen years, an ache inside to wander
He hopped a freight in Waycross, wound up in L.A.
Lord the cold nights had no pity on a Waycross Georgia farmboy
Most days he went hungry, then the summer came
He met a girl known on the strip as San Francisco's Mabel Joy
Destitutions child born of an L.A. street called shame
Growing up came quietly in the arms of Mabel Joy
Laughter found their mornings, brought a meaning to his life
Yes, the night before she left, sleep came and left that Waycross country boy with dreams of Georgia cotton and a California wife
Sunday morning found him standing 'neath the red light of her door
When a right cross sent him reeling, put him face down on the floor
In place of Mabel Joy he found a merchant mad merine, he growled that Georgia neck is red, but sonny your still green
He turned twenty-one in a gray rock federal prison
The old judge had no mercy for a Waycross Georgia boy
Starin' at those four gray, in silence he would listen
That midnight freight he knew would take him back to Mabel Joy
Sunday morning found him lyin' 'neath the red light of her door
With a bullet in his side he cried have you seen Mabel Joy
Stunned and shaken someone said she's not here no more
She left this house four years today
They say she's looking for some Georgia farm boy

Take a gun out of the closet, put it on next while aboard it
Come stand in front of me and let me see
Take a one smile that you wear
And place it on these lips that's burning
To share this fire you've built inside of me.

Turn the light down in the bedroom,
Put the sheet down from the pillow
When we're like this love's easy understood
Let's walk through this house we live in
To the room we always love it
And let's love each other while the feeling's good.

With all my will I promise, with all of me I love you
This feeling that I got just grows and grows
I can't stop disapponting you, I ccan't stop my need in you
No more than I can stop the wind that blows.

About to hold your sweet loving
As long as we both have this feeling
I love you every way
I know that's good.

Let's walk through this house we live in
To the room we always love it
And let's love each other while the feeling's good...
