This moment will never come again
I know it because it has never been before
And I listen to the rain outside the door—
A thousand voices singing songs that ain't been sung before

Some days, while lost in reverie
I find the very hours have slipped away from me
As the sunlight dances through the leaves
the patterns they awaken me, and I say "Hey, Ho"

This moment will never come again
I know it because it has never been before

Where we are now, soon it will be there
Where we are now, soon it will be there
Here we are now; soon it will be there
It's nothing more, it's nothing less
than the place that we are in...

This moment will never come again.
I know it because it has never been before.
And I listen to the wind, blowing
and I see the trees are shaking

Early in the morning on a farm far from the main road
Up before anyone else
I think I'll go for a walk out in the woods, not sure just where
Might go see if TC's there

The dew had not yet left the yard
Diamonds in the grass
A wealthy girl and all
Took all my good friends
[whistles] Here Booger, here Rex
Way across the field they come
Here they come, here they are

We go out in the woods
Way across the fields
And the birds sing it's morning in spring [bird calls]

And a hippo cloud passes overhead
Followed by a cat cloud with a ball of yarn in its paws
Around the final bend I see a trailer sitting there
[knocks on door] 'Miss Gibson, is TC here?'
'Well he's out back, honey' [runs out back]
TC is a memory
TC

In TC's younger days he played many a barhouse and roundhouse
All across the southland
He built some houses that people live in now, yes he did
TC fought in some wars
Did quite a few chores
Planted plenty of gardens
Raised kids, raised pigeons
In his toolshed that he's built out back
He's got his homemade heater and a Fridgedaire full of root beer
And a pool table sitting there

And his friends
These animals that come around
He feeds them at twilight
TC's got many a story to tell
With the dancing light in his eyes
He plays ukelele
'You are my sunshine, my only sunshine...'
'O my darling, O my darling, O my darling...'
TC

Now what would a man like TC do
With a million dreams
But them in a box, lock them up tight
And mark them 'Unimportant Things'

TC is a memory

One laugh in the middle of a struggle
A diamond at the bottom of a puddle
Did you ever stare at the moon until you saw double
I hear you walk away from trouble

Good love there ain't no denying
Bad love somebody ain't trying
Did you ever walk someplace just to take the time
Or take the fast road and get going

Then the rules break
There's no mistake
These are precious times
You and I
We walk the line

I looked in a frying pan, I seen a soul
I looked at a dying man, he sang alone

We've got mountains
We've got beaches
We've got love that make us mad
Love that has to teach us

I looked in a frying pan, I seen a soul
I looked at a dying man, he sang alone

When the rules break
There's no mistake
These are precious times
You and I
We walk the line...

It's a straight and narrow path
Each man walks, each man walks the line

She lived on the curve of the road
In an old tar-paper shack
On the south side of town
On the wrong side of the tracks
Sometimes on the way into town
We'd say 'Mama, can we stop and give her a ride?'
Sometimes we did, but her hands flew from her side
Wild eyed, crazy Mary

Down a long dirt road
Past the parson's place
An old blue car
We used to race
Little country store with a sign tacked to the side
Said ' No L-O-I-T-E-R-I-N-G allowed'
Underneath that sign always congregated quite a crowd
Take a bottle, drink it down, pass it around
Take a bottle, drink it down, pass it around
Take a bottle, drink it down, pass it around

One night thunder cracked mercy backed outside my windowsill
Dreamed I was flying high above the trees, over the hills
Looked down into the house of Mary
Terrible tunnel, newspaper-covered walls
And Mary rising up above it all

Next morning on the way into town
Saw some skid marks, and followed them around
Over the curve, through the fields
Into the house of Mary

That which you fear the most, could meet you halfway
That which you fear the most, could meet you halfway

The lights on the city look so good
Almost like somebody thought they would

What kind of song would you give if you had a song to give
What kind of life would you live if you had a life to live
Now wouldn't you want to make something good that you could look on
It would give you lots of pleasure, yeah you would

What about this thing that you gave
What if it weren't quite perfect
What if there was something bad about it
Wouldn't you still love it just the same
Wouldn't you still care about it

The lights on the city look so good
Almost like somebody thought they would

Sister got bit by a copperhead snake in the woods behind the house
Nobody was home so I grabbed her foot and sucked that poison out
Sister got better in a month or so when the swelling it went down
And I'd started off my teenage years with poison in my mouth

We were too young to be hippies
Missed out on the love
Learned from the teens of the late-70s in the summer of the drugs

Mama and daddy could never understand that life was never dull
Their idea of a rollicking time was a kitchen taffy pull
Acid, grass, downs and speed, junk those days were made of
How could they suspect those kids were monsters beneath their makeup

We were too young to be hippies
Missed out on the love
Learned from the teens of the late-70s in the summer of the drugs

To boys and girls in every town
The sandman spread his sand around
Now we are just waking up from the summer of drugs

Mamas and daddies' too shy to talk about those birds and bees
The integrated schools had stopped, the facts of life were these
Girls and boys went away, came back empty after a weekend
And talk on telephones consisted of hushed voices speaking

Smoke Gets In Your Eyes

[No lyrics]

. . .

I'm gonna live my life
Like everyday's the last
Without a simple goodbye
It all goes by so fast
And now that you're gone
I can't cry hard enough
No, I can't cry hard enough
For you to hear me now

Can I open my eyes
And see for the first time
I've let go of you like
A child letting go of his kite

There it goes
Up in the sky
There it goes
Beyond the clouds
For no reason why
I can't cry hard enough
No, I can't cry hard enough
For you to hear me now

Can I look back in vain
And see you standing there
When all that remains
Is just an empty chair
And now that you're gone
I can't cry hard enough
No, I can't cry hard enough
For you to hear me now

You wanna know all about
Where you can get some
You need to know fast
There is no doubt you wanna know
Where you'll find some love

'Cause everybody wants it
Everybody needs it
Nobody gets the meaning of it
Not without love

Love is a giving thing
Love is a forgiving thing
Like spring... love
And you know you can trust in love

A man once said to me
A long time ago
He lost his true love
How can that be
Maybe later he'll see that
All that lives on is love

And everybody wants it
Everybody needs it
Nobody seems to get it
All confused about it
But to get it
You have to just give it
You have to just live it

Once in a while
You open up just like a child
And see things fresh and new
I wish this for you
I wish this for you

Love
Everybody wants it
Everybody needs it
Everyone deserves it
Even if you're bad
Even if you're sad
Even if you're mad or blue...
