Oh they say that country music's gone to town
Hold your flocks and put on the cap and gown
What's the country boy to do what's this world a comin' to
Oh they say that country music's gone to town

Grandpa used to take his dear old fiddle on his knee
And Uncle Buck would git the banjo down
The only music ever heard that could stop a mockin' bird
Now they say that country music's gone to town
Oh they say that country music's...
( fiddle - el.banjo )
One day I was walkin' through the canyons and the hills
I came upon a cabin far away
An old man with his banjo sat there a paddin' his big toe
And as he played it I could hear his say
Oh they say that country music's...

. . .

Blue moon of Kentucky keep on shining shine on the one that's gone and proved untrue
Blue moon of Kentucky keep on shining shine on the one that's gone and left me blue
It was on the moonlight night the stars were shining bright
When she whispered on high your love has said goodbye
Blue moon of Kentucky keep on shining
Shine on the one that's gone and said goodbye
[ fiddle ]
It was on the moonlight night...

. . .

Now will you love me little darlin' when I'm in some distant land
And you know I can't be with you or will you be lovin' another man
Will you be lovin' another man will you be lovin' another man
When I return will you be waiting or will you be lovin' another man
( dobro )
Now don't be cryin' on my shoulder tellin' me that love is grand
And before I'm out of sight dear you'll be lovin' another man
Will you be lovin' another man...
( fiddle )
Now if I find this to be true dear I want you to please understand
Don't be cryin' on my shoulder just keep on lovin' another man
Will you be lovin' another man...

. . .

Tonight I'm alone without you my dear but in my heart's a longin' for you still
All I have to do now is sit alone and pine in our little cabin home on the hill
Oh someone has taken you from me and left me here all alone
Just listen to the rain beat on my window pane in our little cabin home on the hill
[ dobro - el.banjo ]
I hope you were happy tonight as you are but in my heart's a longin' for you still
But I'll just keep it there then I won't be alone in our little cabin home on the hill
Oh someone has taken you from me...

. . .

Oh the people would come from far away they'd dance all night till the break of day
When the caller hollered do-se-do we knew Uncle Pen was ready to go
Late in the evening about sundown high on the hill and above the town
Uncle Pen played the fiddle and oh how it would ring
You could hear it talk you could hear it sing
( fiddle )
Well he played an old tune called Soldier's Joy and the one they called Boston Boy
And the greatest of all was Jenny Lind to me that's where fiddlin' begin
Late in the evening about sundown...
( fiddle )
I'll never forget that mournful day when Uncle Pen was called away
They hang up his fiddle they hang up his bow they know it was time for him to go
Late in the evening about sundown...

. . .

On Sunday when the church bells start ringing they're ringing for you and for me
Let's all gather round at the altar and pray that our souls may be free
I'll meet you in church Sunday morning and we'll all kneel down and pray
We'll pray to our Lord up in heaven to guide us safe home on our way
[ fiddle ]
It's a place where we all meet on Sunday and worship our Lord up above
And let all our sins be forgiven and meet with our ones above
I'll meet you in church...

. . .

Howdy neighbor howdy get out and come right in
We'll make a bowl of gravy to sop your biscuits in
Boil a pot of coffee and bake a big fat hen
Cook another country ham to feed a hundred men

Drive your wagon in the yard and turn your donkey loose
Kick that old hound out of the way and watch them fightin' goose
So howdy neighbor howdy come in and sit right down
Come on and tell us all the news how are things in town
[ fiddle ]
We're so glad to see you been a wonderin' how you've been
Everybody's feelin' fine so let the fun begin
Get the banjo off the wall and tune it up in A
Play some good ole country tunes like grandpa used to play
[ el.banjo ]
Go and get your fiddle down play the tune that I like so
Somethin' bout an old man Clark I think his name was Joe
[ fiddle ]
Howdy neighbor howdy...

. . .

I thought I had seen pretty girls in my time but that was before I met you
I never saw one that I wanted for mine that was before I met you
I thought I was swinging the world by the tail I thought I could never be blue
I thought I'd been kissed and I thought I'd been loved but that was before I met you
[ el.banjo ]
I wanted to ramble and always be free but that was before I met you
I said that no woman could ever hold me but that was before I met you
I thought I was swinging...
[ el.banjo - dobro ]
They tell me I must reap just what I have sown but darling I hope it's not true
For once I made plans about living alone but that was before I met you
I thought I was swinging...
That was before I met you

Well I wonder how the old folks are at home
I wonder if they'll miss me when I'm gone
I wonder if they'll pray for the boy who went away
And left his dear old parents so alone
Now you can hear the cattle lowin' in the lane
You can see the fields of blue grass where I roam
You can almost hear them cry as they kiss their boy goodbye
I wonder how the old folks are at home
( el.banjo - fiddle )
Just a village and a homestead on the farm
And a mother's love to shield you from all harm
A mother's love so true a sweetheart that loves you
Just a village and a homestead on the farm
Now you can hear the cattle lowin'...

. . .

I think I'll go across the ocean if I don't change my notion
I just got to forget you if I can
Well I'm feelin' so blue I don't know what to do
Because I'm head over heels in love with you
Every day I'm sad and lonely I keep thinkin' of you only
I just can't bear the thought of losin' you
Well I'm feelin' so blue I don't know what to do
Because I'm head over heels in love with you
[ el.banjo - fiddle ]
Oh when nights are sad and lonely I keep thinkin' of you only
I just can't bear the thought of losin' you
Well I'm feelin' so blue...
Oh yes I'm head over heels in love with you

. . .

There'll be a great gathering in the sky when all of God's children get home
We'll join the happy millions as they sing there around the great white throne
I'm speakin' of a big camp meetin' where we never shall say goodbye
I'm longin' for the day when I hear my Saviour say there's a gathering in the sky

One by one we pass through the valley den our load seems hard to bear
But I'm goin' to a great reunion where people's not afraid of prayer
There'll be a lot of old time singing somewhere up there on high
It seems that I can hear them sayin' there's a gathering in the sky
There'll be a great gathering in the sky...
[ dobro ]
There'll be a great gathering in the sky...
