COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER
Words and music by Loretta Lynn

Well, I was born a coal miner's daughter
In a cabin on a hill in Butcher Holler
We were poor, but we had love
That's the one thing that daddy made sure of
He shoveled coal to make a poor man's dollar.

My daddy worked all night in the Vanleer coal mine
All day long in the field a-hoin' corn
Mommie rocked the babies at night
And read the Bible by the coal-oil light
And ever'thing would start all over come break of morn'.

Daddy loved and raised eight kids on a miner's pay
Mommie scrubbed our clothes on a washboard ever' day
Why, I've seen her fingers bleed
To complain there was no need
She'd smile in Mommie's understanding way.

In the summertime we didn't have shoes to wear
But in the wintertime we'd all get a brand new pair
From a mail order catalog
Money made from sellin' a hog
Daddy always managed to get the money somewhere.

Yeah!, I'm proud to be a coal miner's daughter
I remember well - the well where I drew water
The work we done was hard
At night we'd sleep 'cause we were tired
I never thought of ever leaving Butcher Holler.

Well, a lot of things have changed since way back then
And it's so good to be back home again
Not much left but the floor
Nothing lives here anymore
Except the mem'ries of a coal miner's daughter.

Hello darlin', nice to see you, it's been a long time
You're just as handsome as you used to be
How's your new love, are you happy, hope you're doin' fine
Just to know it means so much to me.

What's that darlin', how'm I doing, I'm doing all right
Except I can't sleep and I cry all night till dawn
What I'm trying to say is I love you and miss you
And I'm so sorry that I did you wrong.

Look up darlin', let me kiss you just for old time sake
Let me hold you in my arms one more time
Thank you darlin', may God bless you and may each step you take
Bring you closer to the things you seek to find.

Goodbye darlin', gotta go now, gotta try to find a way
To lose these mem'ries of a love so warm and true
And if you should ever find it in your heart to forgive me
Come back darlin', I'll be waiting for you...

Let me be a little kinder let me be a little blinder
To the faults of those around me let me praise a little more
Let me be when I am weary just a little bit more cheery
Think a little more of others and a little less of me.

Let me be a little braver when temptation bids me waver
Let me strive a little harder to be all that I should be
Let me be a little meeker with the brother that is weaker
Let me think more of my neighbors and a little less of me.

--- Instrumental ---

Let me be when I am weary just a little bit more cheery
Let me serve a little harder for those I'm striving for
Let me be a little meeker with the brother that is weaker
Think a little more of others and a little less of me.

Let me be a little kinder let me be a little blinder
To the faults of those around me let me praise a little more
Let me be when I am weary just a little bit more cheery
Think a little more of others and a little less of me...

You're tellin' me how bad I am for loving him
That I can't be much, and love him, he's your man
Go on say, I'm no good, call me anything you dare
For if how much I love him tells how bad I am
Then you won't find any one any worse, any where.

I treat him like the man he is
And when he needs I'm there
He must not think that I'm so bad
For he takes me everywhere.

For if how much I love him tells how bad I am
Then you won't find any one any worse, any where.

--- Instrumental ---

You're tellin' me that you will never set him free
And you say that we've disgraced you, him and me
You know you don't love him and he knows how much I care
So if how much I love him tells how bad I am
Then you won't find any one any worse, any where.

I treat him like the man he is
And when he needs I'm there
He must not think that I'm so bad
For he takes me everywhere.

For if how much I love him tells how bad I am
Then you won't find any one any worse, any where...

Don't look so sad I know it's over
But life goes on and this old world will keep on turning
Let's just be glad we had some time to spend together
There's no need to watch the bridges that were burning.

Lay your head upon my pillow
Hold your warm and loving body close to mine
Hear the whisper of the raindrops
Blowing soft against the window
And make believe you love me
One more time for the good times.

I'll get along, you'll find another
And I'll be here if you should find you ever need me
Don't say a word about tomorrow or forever
There'll be time enough for sadness when you leave me.

Lay your head upon my pillow
Hold your warm and loving body close to mine
Hear the whisper of the raindrops
Blowing soft against the window
And make believe you love me
One more time for the good times...

(Larry Brinkley - Lee McAlpin)

When the man of the house ain't never home
Here I am again tonight all by myself
It's not hard to figure out
That you're out with someone else.

So this girl's gettin' ready, gettin' sad to go wrong
'Cause the man of the house ain't never home
When the man of the house ain't never home
That's enough to cause most women to go wrong.

When you stagger in tonight
And find me gone
It's 'cause the man of the house
Ain't never home.

--- Instrumental ---

You didn't think
That I would ever slip and fall
Well, that's what you get, forsaken
And don't forget you caused it all.

And it gets pretty lonesome
When you'll have to sleep alone
When the man of the house
Ain't never home.

When the man of the house ain't never home
Here I am again tonight all by myself
It's not hard to figure out
That you're out with someone else.

So this girl's gettin' ready, gettin' sad to go wrong
'Cause the man of the house ain't never home
When the man of the house ain't never home
That's enough to cause most women to go wrong.

When you stagger in tonight
And find me gone
It's 'cause the man of the house
Ain't never home.

No, the man of the house ain't never home...

(Loretta Lynn)

Gonna have my head examin'
'Cause my mind's in bad shape
The way that you've been actin'
I think that you've gone ape.

The way I let you treat me
It's enough to make me sick
I'm gonna have my head examin'
And find out what makes me tick.

If I had the brains of a dummy
I'd be smart
'Cause there ain't no feelin'
In a poor dummy's heart.

And when it comes to cheatin'
Honey, you know every trick
I'm gonna have my head examin'
And find out what makes me tick.

--- Instrumental ---

Gonna have my head examin'
'Cause I know my mind is broke
Tonight I saw you kiss her
You said, "Can't you take a joke?"

Now, I won't be your monkey
You'd better change in quick
I'm gonna have my head examin'
And find out what makes me tick.

If I had the brains of a dummy
I'd be smart
'Cause there ain't no feelin'
In a poor dummy's heart.

And when it comes to cheatin'
Honey, you know every trick
I'm gonna have my head examin'
And find out what makes me tick.

I'm gonna have my head examin'
And find out what makes me tick...

He doesn't know that I can't look him in the eyes
For that I can't speak or I'll start tellin' lies
I hope he thinks that I'm just moody and quiet
But another man loved me last night.

Yes, another man loved me last night
I'd almost forgotten what love was really like
But I'm only human, only a woman
I let another man love me last night.

--- Instrumental ---

While he's sleepin', well, I'm crying here awake
Not being loved was more than I could take
So it was wrong, there in his arms, it seemed so right
When another man loved me last night.

Yes, another man loved me last night
I'd almost forgotten what love was really like
But I'm only human, only a woman
I let another man love me last night...

(Marty Robbins)

I gave you everything I thought
I'd wear your ring someday on my finger
In love so blind I stepped to cross the line
Now just memories of you linger.

Just like a child I wished upon a star
Sometimes the girl in love will go too far
I was a crazy fool
Let my heart overrule.

Each decision my mind was makin'
The harm has done
There is no place to run
You can't give me back what you taken.

I gave my all now I don't know where you are
Sometimes the girl in love will go too far
Too far, oh yes, too far
Sometimes the girl in love will go too far.

But I know I was smart for in a little while
I'll be holdin' somebody new
A little gir,l a tiny baby girl
And I know she will look like you.

And she'll be loved just
The same way that you are
Sometimes the girl
In love will go too far...

(Gene McLellan)

Beneath this snowy mantle cold and clean
The unborn grass lies waiting for its coat to turn to green
The snowbird sings the song he always sings
And speaks to me of flowers that will bloom again in spring.

When I was young my heart was young then too
Anything that it would tell me that's the thing that I would do
But now I feel such emptiness within
For the thing that I want most in life is the thing that I can't win.

Spread your tiny wings and fly away
And take the snow back with you where it came from on that day
The one I love forever is untrue
And if I could you know that I would fly away with you.

--- Instrumental ---

The breeze along the river seems to say
That he'll only break my heart again should I decide to stay
So little snowbird take it with you when you go
To that land of gentle breezes where the peaceful waters flow.

Spread your tiny wings and fly away
And take the snow back with you where it came from on that day
The one I love forever is untrue
And if I could you know that I would fly away with you.

And if I could you know that I would fly away with you...
