I'm not aware of too many things,
but I know what I know if you know what I mean.
Philosophy is the talk on a cereal box.
Religion is the smile on a dog.
I'm not aware of too many things,
but I know what I know if you know what I mean.
Choke me in the shallow water before I get too deep.
What I am is what I am.
Are you what you are - or what?
I'm not aware of too many things,
but I know what I know if you know what I mean.
Philosophy is a walk on the slippery rocks.
Religion is a light in the fog.
I'm not aware of too many things,
but I know what I know if you know what I mean.
Choke me in the shallow water before I get too deep.
What I am is what I am.
Are you what you are - or what?

Shooting up junk in the bathroom
Makin it with punks on the floor
Livin the scene of her limmisine
Little Miss S. in a mini dress
Living it up to die
In a blink of the public eye

Day-glo point in an electric chair
Electric dye in her lovers hair
A pretty sight in the middle of the night
Made up for everyone to see
Swinging on the branch of a broken family tree

You got a lot of living to do without (x2)
You got a lot of living to do without life

The village idiots in her bed
Never cared that her eyes were red
Never cared that her eyes were dead
In the hours that her face was alive
It was the thing just to be by her side

You got a lot of living to do without (x2)
You got a lot of living to do without life

Hey, alright

You got a lot of living to do without (x2)
You got a lot of living to do without life

You got a lot of living to do without (x2)

Me, I'm a part of your circle of friends
and we notice you don't come around
Me, I think it all depends
on you touching ground with us.
But, I quit. I give up.
Nothing's good enough for anybody else
it seems.
And I quit. I give up.
Nothing's good enough for anybody else
it seems.

And being alone
is the best way to be.
When I'm by myself it's
the best way to be.
When I'm all alone it's
the best way to be.
When I'm by myself
nobody else can say goodbye.

Everything is temporary anyway.
When the streets are wet --
the color slip into the sky.
But I don't know why that means you and I are
- that means you and....
I quit -- I give up.
Nothin's good enough for anybody else it seems.
But I quit. I give up.
Nothing's good enough for anybody else it seems.

And being alone
is the best way to be.
When I'm by myself it's
the best way to be.
When I'm all alone it's
the best way to be.
When I'm by myself
nobody else can say...

Me, I'm a part of your circle of friends
and we notice you don't come around.

Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, where have you been, my darling young one?
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains,
I've walked and I've crawled on six crooked highways,
I've stepped in the middle of seven sad forests,
I've been out in front of a dozen dead oceans,
I've been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard,
And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard,
And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

Oh, what did you see, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, what did you see, my darling young one?
I saw a newborn baby with wild wolves all around it
I saw a highway of diamonds with nobody on it,
I saw a black branch with blood that kept drippin',
I saw a room full of men with their hammers a-bleedin',
I saw a white ladder all covered with water,
I saw ten thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken,
I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children,
And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard,
And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son?
And what did you hear, my darling young one?
I heard the sound of a thunder, it roared out a warnin',
Heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world,
Heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin',
Heard ten thousand whisperin' and nobody listenin',
Heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin',
Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter,
Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley,
And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard,
And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

Oh, who did you meet, my blue-eyed son?
Who did you meet, my darling young one?
I met a young child beside a dead pony,
I met a white man who walked a black dog,
I met a young woman whose body was burning,
I met a young girl, she gave me a rainbow,
I met one man who was wounded in love,
I met another man who was wounded with hatred,
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard,
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

Oh, what'll you do now, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, what'll you do now, my darling young one?
I'm a-goin' back out 'fore the rain starts a-fallin',
I'll walk to the depths of the deepest black forest,
Where the people are many and their hands are all empty,
Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters,
Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison,
Where the executioner's face is always well hidden,
Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten,
Where black is the color, where none is the number,
And I'll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it,
And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it,
Then I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin',
But I'll know my song well before I start singin',
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard,

. . .

Red dog riding in the back of a pickup truck
Free on the freeway
I look at him hoping praying he don't jump
Driving me crazy
Hey ya woyaho I ain't got no place to go
Hey ya oh no

Sing songs sing them loud roll that window down
High on the highway
My heart beating fast running from the past
Times we had
Hey ya woyaho I ain't got no place to go
Hey ya oh no

I ain't looking for no final destination with you
I never want to get there
I ain't looking for no final resting place with you
I never want to die

Be there be there for me when I want you
Be there be there for me when I need you
Be there be there for me when I want you
Want you want you want you to be there

Take me home c'mon
Take me there c'mon
Take me home let me stay

Hey ya woyaho I ain't got no place to go
Hey ya oh no
Hey ya woe is me I ain't got no where to be

. . .

I ain't gonna kill myself loving you
I ain't gonna break my own heart
I ain't gonna kill myself wanting you
When you don't seem to want any part of my love
And I know I'll be fine just as soon as I let go
Yes I know I'll be alright as soon as I let go
Get a strong case of weakness -- a rich worthless love
Tell you straight out that it's twisted
Crack flash of lightning struck from above
Knocked down a cow and I kissed ya
Oh, now, now I know I'll be fine just as soon as I let go
Yes I know I'll be alright as soon as I let go
But I keep holding on for a future
I keep waiting for something to change
I keep holding on for a future
I keep looking for something that I never see
I ain't gonna kill myself loving you
I ain't gonna die for a life together
I ain't gonna kill myself wanting you

Sleep my little baby while you can.
Stay up all night and be tired.
Sleep my little angel like a lamb.
But unlike the sheep follow no man.
Tomorrow's your big day to show off your smile.
Smile. Smile for everyone.
You may fly to Paris in a dream.
Free in the sky like a real bird.
You may not accomplish anything.
If you don't sleep you'll be lazy - baby.
Tomorrow's your big day to show off your smile.
Smile. Smile for everyone.
Drift like a little boat on a wave.
Drift like a little boat on a wave.
Drift like a little boat on a wave.
Tomorrow's your big day to show off your smile.
Smile. Smile for everyone.
Sail through the sea of sad faces with love.
Love. Love for everyone.

The register stood open as the smoke cleared the room
And one man was lying over blood and a broom
The store door was swingin' in a midnight breeze
And another man ran through the dark and the trees

Lost in the moment of what he needs
Lost in the moment of what he needs

He ran past the motel threw his gun in the trash
Looked down through the darkness and counted the cash
The man at the store was trying to stand
Looked up through the white light and reached out his hand

Lost in the moment of what he needs
Lost in the moment of what he needs
Are you there can you hear me
Are you there

The ambulance arrived but it was too late
In the spin of the red lights they covered his face
He had a wife who was waiting watching TV in bed
Wondering why he wasn't home yet
Their baby was sleeping until the telephone rang
He woke and he cried out but nobody came

Lost in the moment of what he needs
Lost in the moment of what he needs
Are you there can you hear me
Are you there

She doesn't know what they'll do now now that he's gone
Try to get over and try to get on
Alone in the backyard a cool afternoon
The tree they planted has started to bloom
She wanted him to see this she wanted him there
She wanted to kiss him and brush back his hair

Lost in the moment of what she needs

We like to spy on the neighbors.
They look so happy together.
Funny the power of strangers.
Sometimes I wonder if they got it better.
Green. Have you seen green?
Check out the view from the rooftop.
They've got a horse and a big trampoline.
Running and jumping till they drop.
Down on the ground and they're rolling around in... green.
Have you seen green?
Have you seen green grass?
So green... grass.
So green.
I'd like to be like that.
I'd like to be like that.
I'd like to be moving on a lawn... so green.
I want to laugh the way they laugh.
See all my blues get back up in the sky.
If only we had what they had.
We'd never worry and we'd never cry for... green.
Have you seen green?
Have you seen grass?
So green... grass.
So green.
I'd like to be like that.
I'd like to be like that.

. . .

Once we're together, naturally
When I'm not here, and you're not away from me
And we're finally home
I'm gonna kiss you, just like I did
That time the breeze slid through the open door
Then I know, I won't miss you anymore...

Like I do now
Like I do now
Like I do now

Taking the wait as long as I can
Too many days is too hard to stand
So I'm on my way
On an airplane, in the sky
In a taxi
On the Triborough Rail
Comin' in

I wonder if you're sleeping

Gonna tell the tale of a dog named Zillionaire
who stands on the back of a whale howling out in the middle of the ocean.
Waves of dog emotion.
Howl on 'til you find your sailor.
Howl on 'til he carries you home.
Hear him calling for his master
a sailor lost at sea who sank inside a splash and disappeared beneath.
Zillionaire was left drowning in his sorrows riding on a whale, drifting in
tomorrow.
Howl out for your sailor.
Howl for yourself.
Howl out for someone to carry you home.
Racecar driver skinny head lookin' out the window.
Racecar driver skinny legs pressed against the pedal.
Faster than a second thought speeding 'round the bend.
Never gonna be caught dead 'less they're at the end.
Racecar driver crazy fool, don't worry about nothin'.
Ball of fire burning heat, slammed against the wall.
Never calculated this thing happening at all.
Twelve excited people saw the ambulance arrive.
Everybody knew that he was more dead than alive.
Racecar driver crazy fool, he don't worry 'bout nothin'.
Racecar driver crazy fool, he don't worry 'bout nothin' cept crashin' o-o-o-ohh.
Crashing o-o-o-ohh. Crashing o-o-o-ohh like waves.
Way out where the water is blue there's no land to be seen.
The sky and the ocean fuse together like events inside a dream.
When the sun sinks in the water
stars look down and blink at the sailors standing on deck
who smoke cigarettes and think.
And sometimes when the waves are mellow,
all crashed out you can hear that lonely dog howling out.
Howl out for you master.
Howl all night long.

She was thirteen months when he was sent to jail.
Behind the bars of her crib and those of his cell.
They wait for her love to come to them.
But she couldn't come.
She was making a living.
This beautiful baby girl grew up so fast.
Called another man "daddy" till she learned of her past.
She waited a lifetime for him.
And one day he comes.
But until then she loved the invisible man.
She loved the invisible man.
He came back into her life when she was fifteen.
He took a bus on weekends.
And he took her to eat down at the driveway in a cadilac.
She told him "I love you".
He never said it back.
She loved the invisible man.
She loved the invisible man.
Under the stars and out in the morning sun.
There are the memories of abandoned love.
Under the stars and out...
And then nobody heard from him in more than a week.
And when they busted in through his door there was blood on the sheets.
They found his body in a field near town.
Somebody shot him and took him out.
Under the stars and out in the morning sun.
There are the memories of abandoned love.
Under stars and out in the morning sun.
There are the memories of...
The invisible man.
She loved the invisible man.

1873 was a very bad year for me.
When all I feared just disappeared so suddenly.
They got their tickets for the train.
Raised their weapons and took aim.
Laughing from the railroad tracks they shot my brothers in the back.
1873. No more thunder on the ground.
Birds were flying round and round.
Though the dust we kicked up no longer could be seen.
And 1873 was a very bad year for me.
1873 was a very bad year for me.
We cradled their babies.
Made up their houses.
Covered their feet.
They took what they needed.
Never took us for granted.
But the were defeated when people shot at me.
In 1873.
Laid out in the broken sun.
Rain beat on us like a drum.
The rhythm of that emptiness which shot my spirit free.
In 1873.
