Cadence:
I don't know why I left (I don't know why I left)
But I know it won't be long (But I know it won't be long)
No it won't be long (No it won't be long)
Till I get back home

They gave me a green uniform and black boots for my feel
Eighteen and wild as hell, I thought it would be neat
They put me on a plane to some strange and foreign land
I said my good-bye to mom and dad and hello to Uncle Sam

Once I was a soldier and not afraid to die
Now I'm a little older and not afraid to cry
Everyday I'm thankful just to be alive
When you've been where I've been any kind of life
Is paradise

Christmas of eighty-nine was a lonely time for me
Panama was probably fine but it was nothing like Tennessee
I never thought the day would come when I might have to kill a man
I did not sleep a wink that night but we won for Uncle Sam

Once I was a soldier and not afraid to die
Now I'm a little older and not afraid to cry
Everyday I'm thankful just to be alive
When you've been where I've been any kind of life
Is paradise

If you've been where I've been any kind of life
Is paradise

It's paradise
Paradise

Lately I've been lonely
Lord knows I don't like that feelin,
anymore than you like feelin lonely too
I don't know which one's to blame
For almost puttin out our flame
But for me it's not the thing for us to do

The way it was
The way we were
Baby you and me is where it was at
And I want...
I want...us back

Girl we've come too far for us
To give up all tomorrow
When we've shared so many good time yesterdays
If I know you like I think I do
I know that you don't wanna lose
Me and you im dying to say

The way it was
The way we were
Baby you and me is where it was at
And I want...
I want, us back

I wanna feel your love all over me
Wrapped up in us is where i wanna be
I want...
I want...
I wanna feel your love all over me
Wrapped up in us is where i wanna be
I want...
I want...us back

Lately I've been lonely
Lord knows I don't like that feelin
Anymore than you like feelin lonely too...

Hello mom and dad, what's been goin' on
I know it's been awhile, since I've written home
I like my new job, sure I like this town
But I finally got me something to write home about

She's got long blonde hair, and deep blue eyes
She likes the music loud and walkin' in the moon light
She laughs sometimes, sometimes until she cries
Oh mom, I'm in love, and dad, I'm sure you'd be proud
'Cause I finally got me something to write home about

I got that raise in pay now aint just getting by
Looks like I'm on my way I guess I must be livin' right
Oh if my old friends could only see me now
'Cause I finally got me something to write home about

She's got long blonde hair and deep blue eyes
She likes the music loud and walkin' in the moonlight
She laughs sometimes, sometimes until she cries
Oh mom, I'm in love, and dad, I'm sure you'd be proud
'Cause I finally got me something to write home about

Yeah mom I'm in love, and dad im sure you'd be proud
'Cause I finally got me something to write home about

That girl is somethin'

Yeah she's somethin'

They pulled up in a pick up truck
That held everything they owned
He unlocked the door and carried her
Over their new threshold
They stood there, tears in their eyes
Neither one could speak
Hand in hand, room by room, oh it was everything

Three bedrooms, two baths, one car garage
Front porch with a swing at one end
A little over an acre lot all wrapped in a white picket fence
It was more than a house, it was home sweet home
Where all their dreams came true
302 South Maple Avenue

Second mortgage, two kids later
They were still goin' strong
They came through all kinds of changes
And did some addin' on
They filled each room with memories
That money could not buy
They weren't rich, but that old house
Had a wealth of love inside

Three bedrooms, two baths, one car garage
Front porch with a swing at one end
A little over an acre lot all wrapped in a white picket fence
It was more than a house, it was home sweet home
Where all their dreams came true
302 South Maple Avenue

They're older now and the kids are gone
Talk about a smaller place
But the life they shared together there
Won't let them move away

Three bedrooms, two baths, one car garage
Front porch with a swing at one end
A little over an acre lot all wrapped in a white picket fence
It was more than a house, it was home sweet home
Where all their dreams came true
302 South Maple Avenue

If you hear a voice a-whistlin'
Outside your window baby
It ain't a robin or a bluebird, it's me
If the postman brings a package
With big hearts on the wrapper
And you wonder who it came from, it's me

Who loves you baby
Please don't think I'm crazy
If I go to the extreme
There ain't nothin' I won't do
To hear you say you love me too
Say it's me

If you see a plane fly over
Pullin' a big banner
And the letters spell I love you, it's me
If you hear a DJ
Send a love song out to your name
From a guy who's wild about you, it's me

Who loves you baby
Please don't think I'm crazy
If I go to the extreme
There ain't nothin' I won't do
To hear you say you love me too
Say it's me

Who loves you baby
Please don't think I'm crazy
If I go to the extreme
There ain't nothin' I won't do
To hear you say you love me too
Say it's me

I've been fightin' with these sheets again
Can't make myself lie still
My pillowcase is soakin' wet
And yet l feel a chill
It takes all I can do these days
To just survive the nights
It gets crazy when a man can't get a woman off his mind

When a man can't shake a memory
He runs hot and cold and blind
He hates her, then he loves her
Then he hates her one more time
Your love has such a grip on me
It chokes me like a vine
Oh, it's crazy when a man can't get a woman off his mind

I've been phonin' you since eight o'clock
It's almost four a.m.
My mind keeps paintin' pictures
Of you out lovin' him
I just crushed a dixie cup
For runnin' out of wine
It gets crazy when a man can't get a woman off his mind

When a man can't shake a memory
He runs hot and cold and blind
He hates her, then he loves her
Then he hates her one more time
Your love has such a grip on me
It chokes me like a vine
Oh, it's crazy when a man can't get a woman off his mind

Yeah, it drives him crazy when a man can't get a woman off his mind

Hit the snooze when the 'larm clock rings
Layin' there doin' that sleepy head thing
There's a bird out my window spreadin' his wings
Cheap chirp doin' that sing in'
Thing I do when I first get up is the coffee thing in my favorite cup
Or two gets me goin' got things to do
Let me tell you a thing or two

Ev'rything's a thing if you know what I mean
You can't do nothin' 'cause there's no such thing
Some things are big, some things are small
Some mean a lot, some nothin' at all
It's all laid out in the scheme of things
No matter what it is
Ev'rything's a thing

Off to work in my old Mustang
Doin' that bumper to bumper thing
Up ahead a-ring-a-ling-ding-ding
Some guy's doin' that cell phone
Thing is the light turns green and he ain't doin' that drivin' thing
And the thing is about all this, that talkin' thing and drivin' don't mix

Ev'rything's a thing if you know what I mean
You can't do nothin' 'cause there's no such thing
Some things are big, some things are small
Some mean a lot, some nothin' at all
It's all laid out in the scheme of things
No matter what it is
Ev'rything's a thing

If you think this song ain't worth hummin'
You got another thing... comin'

Ev'rything's a thing if you know what I mean
You can't do nothin' 'cause there's no such thing
Some things are big, some things are small
Some mean a lot, some nothin' at all
It's all laid out in the scheme of things
No matter what it is
Ev'rything's a thing

Ev'rything's a thing
Ev'rything's a thing

He made it to every ball game unless he just had to go to work
He always said a man's always juggle his time and his money
and he's got to know what each one is worth
He taught me so many things even when he wasn't trying to
when I'm in a situation I cant figure out I just ask myself
what would he do?

I'm walking in my father's shoes He's never let me down and
thats alot to live up to stumblin' fallin' trying to stand tall and
walking in my father's shoes

I'm balancin' my checkbook balancin' my life
chasin' down the dollar tryin' to buy some time
I jump out in the fastlane sometimes i risk it all
runnin' myself right down to a crawl

and I get up on sunday mornin' and get down on my knees I
always feel that hes right there listenin' givin' me direction
and givin' me strength

I'm walkin' in my father's shoes he's never let me down and
that's alot to live up to stumblin' fallin' tryin' to stand tall and
walking in my father's shoes yes im stumblin' fallin' tryin' to stand tall
and walkin' in my father's shoes

(Bill Anderson/Buddy Cannon/Craig Morgan)

He's lookin' in the mirror checkin' out his hair
Puffin' on his cologne
He ain't shaved since Tuesday but tonight
Every little whisker's gone
He's goin' out with the perfect wife
But she ain't his own

Hush - can't talk about it
Hush - dance all around it
Everybody's doin' it, old and young
Don't breathe a word, cat's got your tongue
Hush

Mama makes breakfast, packs the kids' lunch
And sends them on their way
She cleans up the kitchen, makes all the beds
Then loads up her TV tray
Ah, but that ain't coffee in her coffee cup
That gets her through the day

Hush - can't talk about it
Hush - dance all around it
Everybody's doin' it, old and young
Don't breathe a word, cat's got your tongue
Hush

Pretending it ain't happening won't make it disappear
You can sweep it under the carpet, look the other way
But it's still here

You can hear 'em screamin', yellin' through the walls
Just another normal night
You hear glass breakin' and baby's cryin'
But you say it's gonna be alright
You just turn up the volume on your radio
And turn down the light

Hush - can't talk about it
Hush - dance all around it
Everybody's doin' it, old and young
Don't breathe a word, cat's got your tongue
Hush

Hush - can't talk about it
Hush - dance all around it
Everybody's doin' it, old and young
Don't breathe a word, cat's got your tongue
Hush

Hush - can't talk about it
Hush - dance all around it
Everybody's doin' it, old and young
Don't breathe a word, cat's got your tongue
Hush

(Craig Morgan/MarIa Cannon Goodman/Gene Ellsworth)

I walk around the block
To try to get you off my mind
I turn the corner, look who's there
Just like I remember pretty as a picture
And I was just beginning not to care
Standing in the rain I stopped to stare

'Cause everywhere I go, you're goin' my way
In the dark of night, in the light of day
I can't run and I can't hide
There just ain't no place
'Cause everywhere I go, you're goin' my way

Sittin' at the table
I sense you behind me
Even though I know you're not really here
Climbin' into bed you slide in beside me
I feel my eyes well up in tears
Oh I can't make your memory disappear

'Cause everywhere I go, you're goin' my way
In the dark of night, in the light of day
I can't run and I can't hide
There just ain't no place
'Cause everywhere I go, you're goin' my way

I can learn to live without you
I wouldn't even dream about you
If you'd only set me free

'Cause everywhere I go, you're goin' my way
In the dark of night, in the light of day
I can't run and I can't hide
There just ain't no place
'Cause everywhere I go, you're goin' my way

Everywhere I go

I walk around the block
To try to get you off my mind

(Buddy Cannon)

I was takin' a walk through a small country city
Just seem' what there was to see
I sat down to read a historical marker
When I felt someone sit down by me

He leaned on the tank that was helping his breathing
Said it's bad when your body is gone
I said this is sure a nice town that you've got here
He said yeah, but there's no place like home

I wish I could see Bakersfield
Where the oil wells are pumpin'
The oranges are bloomin'
And the grapevine winds down from the hill
When I close my eyes I can touch the clear skies
At the corner where I used to live
Oh I wish I could see Bakersfield

He said you don't ever know where life's gonna lead you
When you go ramblin' off down the track
Sometimes I wish I'd never left California
Then I couldn't want to go back

Recitation:
He said "You know, I used to be a well-known country singer
Made my first record back in 1953
At one time Buck Owens was my lead guitar player
And ol' Hag once wrote a song about me"

I wish I could see Bakersfield
Where the oil wells are pumpin'
The oranges are bloomin'
And the grapevine winds down from the hill
When I close my eyes I can touch the clear skies
At the corner where I used to live
Oh I wish I could see Bakersfield

Oh I wish I could see Bakersfield
